Competing with One Hand Tied Behind Their Back

Reliant sell Samsung, LG and Bosch appliances to trade and retail customers from their base in Blackpool, and the team know their market well enough to win on experience rather than price, but their website couldn’t, because the agency that built it was also their ERP provider and every feature Reliant paid for was rolled out to that provider’s other clients, their direct competitors included.

Design decisions were made for them, and new functionality arrived on the provider’s timeline. The build underneath was poor too. Stock checks and energy ratings were hard-coded into the templates, reading huge blocks of XML on every page load, so the site was slow and nobody could change it without going back to the provider.

Reliant needed a specialist Magento agency in Manchester, and they’re one of many North West eCommerce brands we’ve put back in control of their own site.

Their team leverages their expertise to provide sound opinions and advice to guide the project in the right direction.

Taking Back Control

Reliant needed to own their site, and to stand out in a market where competitors were racing each other to the bottom on Amazon. So they left the incumbent provider, and we built a new Magento 2 store on Hyvä that they own outright.

The catch was timing. Black Friday and Cyber Monday were only weeks away and too important to miss, so we had eight weeks from receiving the designs to a fully integrated site going live.

Performance-First Frontend

The old site was weighed down by hard-coded data calls and templates no Magento specialist would have written. We stripped that out, restructured how product data loads, and built the frontend on Hyvä. Reliant’s customers compare several appliances in one visit, so every page they open being quicker adds up fast.

Custom nCompass ERP Integration

Reliant kept their ERP and changed their web provider. We worked directly with nCompass on a custom integration that connects inventory, back orders and product offers to the new Magento 2 store, so Reliant kept all the operational functionality they relied on and now own the connection rather than renting it.

A Checkout That Builds Confidence

When someone’s spending hundreds of pounds on an appliance, the checkout has to feel safe. We built a custom checkout and have kept optimising it since, making it quicker, cutting steps and adding trusted payment providers so customers have more choice when they pay. The checkout is where the sale is won or lost, and every second of friction there costs revenue.

Mobile-First Shopping Experience

Most of Reliant’s customers research on their phones, and more of them buy there every year. The old site wasn’t built for that, so we built the new one mobile-first, from browsing and comparing appliances right through to checkout.

What did this mean for Reliant?

Conversion went up 78%, customers spent 17% more per order, and annual turnover went up 141%, without Reliant racing anyone to the bottom on price. Within months they were hiring a merchandiser and an SEO manager to keep up, they beat much bigger competitors on ads over Black Friday, and they’ve been talking about a new warehouse ever since.

Full Ownership and Competitive Differentiation

Reliant own their platform, their design and their roadmap. Nothing they pay for goes to their competitors, and nothing waits on someone else’s timeline.

1

Commercial Growth in a Crowded Market

Turnover is up 141%, with conversion up 78% and average order value up 17%, in a market where most of their competitors were cutting prices.

2

A Partnership That Keeps Expanding

We’re still on retainer for CRO, with a strategy session every month, and we’ve since built two more sites for other parts of the business.

3

Paying for features your competitors get too?
