How much does a Hyvä build cost?

3 Min Read

Search “Hyvä cost” and you’ll find agencies quoting anything from $4,500 to $17,000. Our new Hyvä sites start at £46,000 + VAT. Nobody’s lying, they’re just pricing different jobs.

The low quotes are for installing the theme and restyling it. Ours is the whole build: design, extensions, integrations, checkout, testing, and a launch that keeps your rankings intact. If someone gives you a figure without asking which extensions you run, they’re guessing (and you’ll find out what they guessed in month two).

The licences are the cheap bit

The Hyvä Theme has been free and open source since November 2025. It used to be a €1,000 licence per project, which is why older articles still list it as a cost.

Hyvä Checkout is still paid. It’s €1,000 one-off with a year of updates, then €250 a year from year two, or €1,000 up front covers five years. On a build this size that’s a rounding error, and it’s usually money well spent, because the standard Magento checkout is one of the slowest parts of a Luma store.

Hyvä sells other add-ons too, like Hyvä UI and Hyvä Commerce, with current prices on hyva.io. If you’re on Adobe Commerce, your Adobe licence is separate again, priced by Adobe on your sales volume.

What actually moves the price

Extensions, every time. Hyvä doesn’t load Luma’s JavaScript, so any extension that touches the frontend needs a Hyvä-compatible version. Plenty of the popular ones have one. Some don’t, and those get rebuilt, replaced or switched off. A store running 15 frontend extensions and a store running 60 are different projects, which is why our NNP Workshop audits every extension before anyone quotes you for a build.

Design. Rebuilding your current design on Hyvä costs less than redesigning. But if the design hasn’t been touched since lockdown, a faithful rebuild means paying to recreate the parts that aren’t converting.

The checkout. You can run Hyvä Checkout, customise it, or keep Magento’s own checkout in fallback mode. Customising is where Hyvä saves the most. A checkout change that would cost £30,000 to £40,000 on Luma usually comes in at £10,000 to £20,000 on Hyvä, because there’s far less code to fight with. Our rates are the same, there are just fewer hours in it.

Integrations. ERP, PIM, stock and delivery all live in the backend, so a frontend rebuild mostly leaves them alone. A new site has to move or reconnect them, and that’s part of the gap between the two.

A new site, or just a new frontend?

You might not need a whole new site. If your Magento backend is in decent shape, a Hyvä frontend rebuild keeps your catalogue, orders, customers and integrations exactly where they are and replaces only what your customers see. That costs less than a new site and carries less risk, because the parts that run your business don’t move.

A new site makes sense when the backend is the problem too: an old Magento version, a tangle of custom code, or a catalogue structure you’ve outgrown. Working out which one you’ve got is most of what the NNP Workshop is for.

What it’s worth

A better question than “what does it cost?” is what the slow site is costing you now.

Say you turn over £3m a year online at a 1.5% conversion rate. Lift that to 1.8% on the same traffic and you’ve added about £600,000 a year, which pays for a £46,000 build in roughly a month.

When we rebuilt Reliant’s frontend on Hyvä, conversion went up 78% and turnover 141%. Within months they were hiring a merchandiser and an SEO manager to keep up, and talking about a new warehouse.

What it costs to run afterwards

Hosting barely changes, and Hyvä Checkout renews at €250 a year from year two. If you keep us on afterwards, a retainer covers updates, security patches applied the day they’re released, and CRO, with a call every fortnight and a full CRO audit every three months. More on that on our Hyvä page, and if you’re still weighing up the theme itself, read Hyvä vs Luma first. If you’re comparing agencies, we’ve listed every UK-based Hyvä partner too.
